iDictate is a free, open-source dictation app for Android and Wear OS. This policy explains what data the app handles and how. iDictate has no backend server of its own, no user accounts, and does not collect analytics or advertising data.
Audio you record and the resulting transcripts are stored only in an encrypted local database on your device (SQLCipher, with the encryption key held in the Android Keystore). This data is never uploaded to any server operated by the developer of iDictate.
iDictate requires you to supply your own API keys for the AI providers you choose to use.
Your API keys are stored only on your device (in Android's EncryptedSharedPreferences),
never transmitted anywhere except directly to the provider's own API as part of an
authenticated request.
When you use these features, the relevant content is sent directly from your device to:
gpt-4o-transcribe / gpt-4o-mini-transcribe).Each provider processes this data under its own privacy policy and terms, since you are interacting with them directly using your own account and key:
iDictate requests microphone access to record dictations, notification access to show recording status, and internet access to reach the AI providers listed above. No location, contacts, or other personal data is accessed.
iDictate contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising SDKs, and no crash-reporting services. No data is sold or shared with any party other than the AI provider you explicitly configure and use, as described above.
All dictations, transcripts, and API keys live in local app storage. Deleting a dictation in the app removes it immediately; uninstalling the app removes everything, since nothing is retained outside your device.
iDictate is not directed at children and does not knowingly collect data from children.
Any changes to this policy will be posted on this page with an updated "last updated" date. The source of this page is version-controlled and publicly viewable in the project's GitHub history.
